PIN Code


PIN Code stands for Postal Index Number. It is used for Indian postal services. It is a 6 digit number. These digits (individual digits and or combination of digits) indicate specific attributes of locations of Indian post offices viz. 'Region', 'Sub-region', 'Sortign District' and 'Post Office'.

Postal Regions


There are 9 postal zones in India. Out of these, 8 covers by all states and UTs. The 9th is dedicated for Army Postal Service.

As on the year 2022, a total of 40 Indian Sites are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Out of 40, 32 are related to culture and 7 are related to nature. "UNESCO" stands for "United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization". It promotes international cooperation in education, sciences, culture, communication and information. The concept of World Heritage such sites belong to all the peoples of the world, irrespective of the territory on which they are located. It adopts the concept of 5 C's i.e. Credibility, Conservation, Capacity-building, Communication and Communities.

ISO 3066 Code

ISO 3166 is a standard that defines internationally honored codes( comprises of digits and/ or letters which we can use when we refer to countries and their subdivisions. The International Organization for Standardization publishes this Code. Its formal name is "Codes for the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions". Using such standard codes helps in saving time, avoiding errors. Being simple code, it is easily understandable worldwide.

This standard is maintained by the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency (ISO 3166/MA). It is located at the ISO central office in Geneva.

For e.g., code for India is "IN" and that for its state Maharashtra is "IN-MH". Currently for India, ISO 3166-2 codes are defined for 28 states and 8 union territories.
